Papier-mâché hare
Idea and execution by Janne Toftegaard Anno1808.dk
These bunnies are made using a method that many have tried to make as children…..Paper mache. We have probably all tried wrapping newspaper around a balloon, and making a funny big pig with legs from the “tits” from an egg carton :-) Here the method is basically the same, but where we make the body from a cardboard template and silver paper. It is fun to make and your children will love having fun making their own paper mache Easter bunny :-)
You need.
Cardboard from a cardboard box
Silver paper
Masking tape
Steel wire for ears, the green floral wire in pieces
White napkins
Wallpaper stickers
A leftover white paint, preferably chalk paint or a matte wall paint
Gypsum powder or polyfilla powder
Peppercorns for eyes
Glue, preferably wood glue, it is strong
Coffee
A leftover ribbon to decorate the rabbit's neck, I tore a piece from some linen fabric
Possibly a bell
Saks
Awl to make holes for the ears (or other pointed object)
Brush
Here's how you do it:
Start by cutting out two parts from the cardboard, a body and a head. Make a filling of the silver paper for the body and head and glue it on each side of the body parts, so that the body is created. Tape the body part together with the head part, with masking tape, so that all the silver paper is hidden. Then you make the legs and arms and glue them on with your wood glue. Now you take two pieces of green steel wire and make two ears, which you cover with masking tape. Cut the ears to a length so that there is a twisted piece of steel wire that will be used to glue them on. Make two holes at the top of the rabbit's head with your awl and glue the ears on, with wood glue. Cover the entire rabbit with masking tape, so that everything is firmly attached, and is easier to cover with the napkins. Now you tear out the napkin and cover the rabbit with it, by brushing it on with wallpaper glue. When the rabbit is dry, paint it with paint, where a little plaster has been put in the paint. The plaster gives the rabbit a more rustic look. Patina the dry hare with coffee and decorate it with a collar and a bell.
Enjoy!
