Doorstop with rope
By Jayne Daimo
This is what I have used:
A rope (a remnant found at a flea market)
Glue gun
Paintbrush
White Gesso from Cadence
Antique powder in mink from Cadence
A piece of fabric with printed text
An oval circle to draw around
A pencil
A pair of scissors
2 alcohol-based markers
Tacky craft yellow from Cadence
This is how I did it:
I started by gluing the rope around the handle, leaving a small piece hanging down from the doorstop so that it would be covered when I turned the string around in circles. I only glued a small piece at a time so that I could press it in place before the hot glue dried. Now I painted the whole thing with Gesso, so that I could prime the fabric and rope at the same time.
Next I added a bit of a vintage look with the mink color. I wanted some kind of label on it, so I found an interesting fabric scrap in my stash. Then I took a suitable size oval circle, which I drew around, and cut it out. Here I painted a border, and sewed with marker.
When I was going to glue my fabric label on, I was very aware that it was thin fabric, on twisted ropes in circles, so here I didn't use a glue gun, but my tacky craft glue. I turned my label over and only put glue around the edge. Since I had painted an edge on the front, it was easy to follow when I glued on the back. Now I had plenty of time to attach my fabric label so that it was nicely stretched out.
