Make the most adorable Dream Catchers
A long time ago - when the world was young, an old spiritual leader of the Lakota tribe was up on a high mountain where he had a vision. In this vision, Iktomi, the Great Spirit and teacher of wisdom, appeared to him in the form of a spider. Iktomi spoke to him in a sacred language that only the spiritual leaders of the Lakota tribe could understand. As Iktomi, the spider, spoke, he took the Ring of the Elder, made of bendable branches. This ring had attached feathers, horsehair, pearls and amulets. The spider began to make a web on this ring. He told the Elder about the wheel of life - how we started as newborns, passed through childhood and on into adulthood. Eventually we become old, to be helped like newborns, and thus the wheel of life is completed. Iktomi gave the cobweb to the Elder of the Lakota tribe and said, "Look, this cobweb forms a perfect circle, but there is a hole in the center of the circle. If you believe in the Great Spirit, then the cobweb will catch your good dreams and ideas , and the bad dreams will disappear through the hole. Use the web to help yourself and your tribe achieve your goals, and take advantage of your tribe's ideas, dreams, and visions." The Elder of the Lakota tribe passed on his vision to his people, and the Lakota tribe still uses the dream catcher as a symbol of the wheel of life. It hangs over their sleeping places or in their homes to capture their dreams and visions. The good in their dreams is caught in the web of life and is remembered; but the evil in their dreams escapes through the hole in the middle and is no longer part of their lives.
This wonderful story makes us want to hang up dream catchers in our own homes. Here we give you ideas on how you can make them yourself, albeit in a slightly modified version. If superstition is to be taken into account, it is important that there are holes in the material you use to make them. The first ones here are made from fine, old bottles. We bought the stands themselves in a hobby shop. Ribbon is wrapped around the frame, after which the bottle is sewn on with ordinary sewing thread. We put lots of ribbons and tulle strips on. They come in different sizes, different shades and different lengths. Some of them are dipped in tea to make them look old. Other tapes are old. You can also attach beads, small feathers or perhaps lucky charms.
If you don't have a ring, you can make one yourself from strong steel wire. You can also use an old wedding wreath for the purpose. Here we have found a few pieces with fabric flowers on them, which are suitable for a few nice bottles. We have sewn them on with sewing thread and decorated one with lace and the other with ribbon. You can use all kinds of lace, tulle and artificial flowers. On some of the rings we have tied the cobweb with ribbon and string, on which freshwater pearls have been glued. The very small one hanging on a mirror is a stiffened bottle, there is no ring on it. On the other hand, there are feathers and pearls attached and a small hole in the middle, as befits a real dream catcher. We hope you have been inspired to be creative.
