Lucky clover
When the plant clover is mentioned, you will automatically think of munching cows in a Danish field. It is both the epitome of nostalgia and Danish summer at its best. But in fact the clover is much more than a plant growing wild in the Danish fields.
This small, fine plant that is in full bloom from early spring is incredibly adorable and suitable for many purposes. Many people have been irritated by clover in their otherwise lush lawns and therefore often see them as weeds, but there is a sea of beautiful clovers that are excellent for everything from houseplants to pots and as ground cover and supplement in your perennial bed. In addition, as an additional feature, it has a wonderful fragrance when it blooms. In Denmark alone, we have 16 different species, of which red clover and white clover are the best known. There are both annual and perennial clovers and a common feature is that they thrive best in a moist and nutrient-rich soil.
In agriculture, clover has for many years played a significant role as fodder in seed mixtures, but beekeepers also enjoy clover, as it contains a lot of nectar. Since ancient times, clover has been attributed a superstitious and both health and good-luck property, but no one really knows where this superstition originates. This may be because since ancient times, deviant specimens, for example plants, have been a warning that something good or bad was brewing. A clover that gets four leaves is due to a mutation in the plant's genetic characteristics and occurs spontaneously, which therefore makes it extremely rare. As a rule, it is the white clover that makes four-leaf clover, but it can also occur in other species. In fact, the clover can make up to thirteen leaves on a single stem, this is of course extremely rare and you probably shouldn't expect it to mean 13 times luck, but how fantastic it must be to find one like that!
Clover in the garden is both a decorative and different element. The red clover with the light purple flowers makes beautiful pots and jars, where it falls beautifully over the edges of the jar. Also, a mix of several different clovers with different leaves, such as the variegated and the white clover, makes a nice game for your summer or pot garden. Plant clover together with other plants, but remember that they thrive best in moist soil and it is best to put it together with plants of equal standing.
The clover is also excellent as a ground cover plant, but you must be aware that the white clover collapses when the frost sets in. However, it rises well again and you can enjoy it from early spring to late autumn. In addition to being a beautiful and decorative plant, clover is one of those plants that is able to fix the nitrogen content of the air for the benefit of the soil in which it lives, so there are no excuses for bypassing clover in your garden.
