A magical garden

"Here, where the road bends, there is such a beautiful house.
The walls are slightly crooked, the windows are quite small.
The door half sinks to its knees, the dog barks, the little critter.
Under the roof swallows chirp, the sun sinks and so on.”

The beautiful old half-timbered house and the enchanting garden we visit bring to mind the song by HC Andersen. The text so vividly describes the atmosphere as if it had been written for this place. There is a calm over this natural and yet tamed garden that can be difficult to describe in words.

Far out in the forest lies the beautiful garden. The property used to be an old brickworks owned by Bidstrup Gods, which now rents the place out to Julie and Hans Gram. The couple have lived here since 1997. When they moved in, there was virtually no garden, and it had to be! It is Julie's great passion. The only things worth building on were the old fruit trees, various fruit bushes and a beautiful fence with Rosa Nevada. This fence forms the entrance to the garden. The first summer, Julie started planting beds around the lawn. Over the years, the garden has developed, and today appears as an adventurous garden, with plenty of space and seating.

At the entrance to the garden there is a large fenced courtyard, part of which is covered. It is a peaceful oasis where the days can just be enjoyed to the fullest. Time almost stands still here. Lots of pots with perennials and summer flowers, the fence with Rosa Nevada, climbing plants and lots of beautiful old garden items, create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The big challenge in the garden is to find plants that thrive with the few hours of sun they get. There are large trees all around the garden, and unfortunately the soil in the garden is not the best either. It has been difficult to find the right plant for the right location, and many plants have died over time. Here, Julie really has to use her now extensive experience in the field and not least her creativity. She uses many shade- and drought-tolerant plants for the places in the garden where there are the most problems. These include lion's foot, hosta, stork's beak, ivy and, not least, collard greens. This is allowed to spread in some areas of the garden. Their flower screens are lovely, so why not use them. They thrive magnificently in places where it can be difficult to get anything else to grow.

The greenhouse and the outdoor workplace in the corner of the kitchen garden are used extensively. Here Julie makes her bouquets and decorations with lots of flowers from the garden. Julie is incredibly creative and everything that grows in the garden should ideally be usable.

Julie's Best Garden Tips:
• When choosing plants, choose them carefully. Stick to a few colors, otherwise the beds often end up looking messy.
• Choose flowers with a slightly wild expression. When you use this type of planting, you can more easily create a romantic and unpretentious garden.
• Make beds in the lawn, plant historic roses, shrubs and climbing plants around the garden and create a sense of space.
• Plant lots of flowers that you can use in decorations and bouquets. Also choose plants with fragrant flowers and leaves.
• Buy garden furniture, preferably old, in the right style. The same applies to various garden items. It creates an atmosphere in the garden. Also choose things and furniture that can stand outside in the winter. It creates life.
• Make sure there are new surprises waiting around the next corner when you walk around your garden. An uncluttered garden is not very interesting.
