Waking up the sleeping beauty

Once upon a time… this is how all good adventures begin. - and this is truly an adventure. Once upon a time there was a dilapidated farm far out in the countryside... when it was built, back in 1875, it had been one of the finest and largest farms in the area, but as the years had passed, it had fallen more and more into disrepair, and in the end no one would be known by it. It was slated for demolition. Until the day when it was bought by a couple of zealots with a head full of good ideas... It was back in 2016 that we at Jeanne d'Arc Living had the good idea to buy this, in our eyes magical place and transform it from end to end... and show the whole project in the magazine over almost 1,5 years. Subsequently, it was used as a location for several articles. I bring you here some before and after pictures of the transformation that took place over the course of a year. You know that feeling you get when you come to a place that is completely magical and almost takes your breath away? -The feeling of stepping into an adventure? That was the feeling we had when we visited this incredible place for the first time, where we got the feeling that time had almost stood still for 100 years. Here was a sleeping beauty just waiting to be brought to life. no doubt about it.

Despite the fact that the then owners had renovated the house (quite a bit, sometime in the 70s) it was untouched and the adventurous atmosphere was partly preserved and we could to that extent "feel the place" and see the possibilities. Both outbuildings and the main house itself were completely overgrown with ivy and wild blackberries. The garden was also completely overgrown. In several places the plants had even grown in through the old windows and were now growing on the inside of the walls. We were completely spellbound. we just had to own this place.

Imagine if it was torn down, it wouldn't be wearable at all. We had been talking for some time that it would be fantastic to find such a place that we could renovate and bring the whole process into the magazine. The place was perfect for that project. In the following year and a half, readers could follow the transformation, room by room, outside as well as inside.

Naturally, we preserved everything we could, renovated with a gentle hand and with great respect for the place. Where possible, we used recycled materials. But we also wanted to ensure that the house was completely updated, with new electrical installation, insulation and everything else that belongs to a modern house. Most importantly, however, we wanted to preserve the magic, so that the calm that came automatically when you stayed there was preserved.
