fastelavn

If you could dream of holding a Mardi Gras party yourself, here we give you inspiration for how you can give it a touch of JDL.. We have made various decorations and treats for the party, some made completely from scratch, others we have skipped a bit across. It must be so that everyone can participate.

The neighbor had just cut down a large birch tree and we were allowed to cut a large branch. The branch is fixed in sand in an old wicker basket lined with old coffee sacks. As a decoration for the branches, we have found a beautiful little pear root on the web, which we have printed on cardboard and then cut out. Pear root hangs on the branches by a thin silver thread.

Handmade paper flowers

The beautiful flowers are made of thin handmade paper in A5 size. The paper is left for approx. 8 layers and the pieces should be approx. 10 x 20 cm. The goals are not that important, you can see what suits your branch best when you get started. The paper folds like a mousetrap, the folds are approx. 1,5 – 2 cm in width, the folds must be made on the narrow part of the paper. Once the paper is folded, tie a piece of lace or fine ribbon around the middle of the paper. Take plenty of lace so you have something to tie the flower to the branch with. Cut the ends round on the paper. Now you unfold the folds, i.e. separate the pieces of paper carefully from each other and then you get the finest flower.

Sweet pear root card

Pjerrot is slightly enlarged on the computer before he is printed on parchment paper. On the back of the parchment paper, put a piece of old paper with beautiful writing, fixed with double-sided tape. You can use the cards as decoration around your home.

The Shrove Tuesday

We bought the barrel in a supermarket. It is painted with Vintage Paint in the color Soft Cream. It is then patinated with Antique Wax in the color Brown. In the middle of the barrel we have made a stone strainer from a crown, this is made with Vintage Paint in the color Black Velvet. The two paper flowers on the side of the barrel are decorated with lots of lace which is patinated with coffee.

Goody bags

The goodie bags are simply made in brown paper bags decorated with small pictures of pear root. The bags are closed with a fine piece of lace.

The table is covered in the same colors as the rest of the party, soft pink and teal. A very simple flower decoration is made in the large terrine. The decoration is made with delicate pink roses and birch branches stuck in a wet oasis. The Shrovetide buns are arranged in three sets, which are placed on top of each other as a kind of tiers. You can get the recipes for them straight away here.

A bit of history:

Mardi Gras parties of earlier times could go really violently. Here they found a live black cat in a barrel. It was a widespread folk belief that a city could escape the plague if a black cat was killed. Therefore it had to be a black cat that got into the barrel. In the 1800th century, the custom of the cat in the barrel was stopped. Now we fill the barrel with goodies. Whoever knocks the bottom out of the barrel is crowned cat queen and whoever knocks the last board down is crowned cat king. Afterwards there is a party with Mardi Gras buns and other goodies.
